Barry Manilow Announces Lung Cancer Diagnosis

Music legend Barry Manilow has revealed he is being treated for lung cancer. The singer-songwriter issued a statement confirming the diagnosis, which led to the cancellation of his remaining "Christmas: A Gift of Love" charity concerts this season.

In his message to fans, Manilow explained that after suffering from bronchitis for several weeks, his doctor ordered an MRI as a precaution. The scan identified a "cancerous spot" on his left lung, which will require surgery to remove. He described the early detection as "pure luck" and "good news," adding that no chemotherapy or further intervention is currently needed.

The cancelled concert series has raised millions for a wide array of charitable causes. These include the HIV hunger charity AAP – Food Samaritans, anti-bullying organisation Boo2Bullying, DAP Health, The Judy Fund for Alzheimer’s research, and the Manilow Music Project, which supports music education in underfunded public schools.

Manilow stated that he intends to resume his live performances in February. For now, he plans to recuperate at home this winter, quipping that he will be "on the sofa... watching reruns of I Love Lucy."

The artist, who built an early and loyal LGBTQIA+ fanbase performing in venues including gay bathhouses in the 1970s, publicly came out at the age of 73. He has since received widespread support from fans and the community following his announcement.
