There has been more bad news for the rich and powerful owners of the GB News Channel, a rogue network in the UK which, unlike other broadcasters, makes little attempt at rational discourse and instead winds its viewers up about the supposed threats of the young, vegans, the left and transgender people. Their viewing figures are often poor. Indeed, specialist minority channels such as the Welsh language S4C and the Gaelic BBC Alba boast bigger audiences. Now comes another blow for the right wing talking heads. Stop Funding Hate, a campaign that seeks to lobby advertisers to sever ties with right wing talk networks, reports as follows:
"GB News has just announced it will cut up to a third of its workforce, as the channel continues to lose money at a staggering rate.
The channel’s ultra-rich co-owners have been pumping good money after bad trying to keep the ship afloat, racking up losses of £131m.
But even when these media outlets are bankrolled by billionaires who care more about pushing a narrative than making a profit, they are still subject to commercial realities.
And as long as GB News amplifies hateful, divisive, inflammatory rhetoric, it will continue to haemorrhage advertisers and money – thanks to people like you speaking up and making it clear that hate should not be profitable.
So let’s be clear: it doesn’t have to be this way. GB News could change its tune, become a responsible broadcaster and stop airing the sort of toxic narratives that companies understandably don’t want to be associated with.
But until they do, we’ll keep holding them to account."
