Senator Ben Sasse believes strongly in the US Constitution. As a Republican, he might not strike you as the most immediate ally of LGBTQ people or of minorities. But as a firm stalwart of the primacy of the USA's Constitution and its Separation of Church and State, Mr Sasse dislikes what he sees emanating from the White House in recent times. With the President's son on right wing television channels describing Democrats as anti-Christian, Mr Sasse has pointed out something that is an open secret in political circles. Mr Trump, although courting the anti-gay evangelical Christian vote, personally thinks they're not very well people. The Washington Post and LGBTQ Nation report that the Senator went further, describing how Donald Trump mocks evangelicals and says “Can You Believe that Bullshit” of their beliefs. It remains to be seen whether Senator Sasse's revelations will hit the Christian evangelical vote, but some have begun to doubt whether it is worth voting for a man with such a chequered sexual history, if it's just to bash their historical enemies such as “atheists” and “the gays”. In addition, some evangelicals have said that whatever their personal feelings about homosexuality are, the real scandal in America today is children with little healthcare and people sleeping on the streets. They have proposed making common cause with Democrats and liberals to tackle these social evils. The revelation that Mr Trump is not particularly enamoured of Christian fundamentalists is of little surprise to some watchers of religion and politics. LGBTQ Nation reports that his aide AJ Delgado, who helped mastermind Trump's 2016 election victory, noted “He's Just not a religious guy”.
