Sydney LGBTQIA Community Mourns Beloved Comic Loss

Australian gay and bi men's magazine DNA reported on the sad loss of a beloved community comedian on Tuesday morning.

The LGBTQIA+ arts community in Sydney is mourning the loss of comedian and performer Brent Thorpe, who has died at the age of 61. The news was confirmed by his husband, Travis De Jonk, in a heartfelt Facebook post shared on 2 February.

In his tribute, De Jonk wrote, “On 6 January 2026, I lost the love of my life, Brent Thorpe,” describing him as “my dearly loved and devoted husband.”

Thorpe was recognised as an emerging and vital voice in LGBTQIA+ comedy. His material was noted for its deeply personal and political edge, often challenging societal double standards and exploring the realities of queer life. He openly spoke about his refusal to "grow old gracefully" and used his platform to critique the biases facing the community.

He was best known for his solo shows, Daddy and its successor Daddy, Don’t Drop The Soap!. These performances blended autobiographical storytelling, nightlife culture, and historical references to the LGBTQIA+ community. Beyond comedy, Thorpe was also a fixture in Sydney's leather scene, regularly hosting ceremonies for related events.

Following the news, tributes have poured in from fellow performers, venues, and friends across the community. The Sydney venue Palms on Oxford, where Thorpe often performed, has indicated that a memorial will be organised and announced at a later date.

DNA Magazine is available in the UK at gay bookstores and larger branches of WH Smiths.
