Good Law Project Stands Up to Transphobic, Litigious Lawyer; Seeks Donations

The Good Law Project's Jo has written to supporters of the progressive legal group, detailing how a lawyer called Sarah Phillimore is trying to silence the group. Jo explains that last summer, their publication detailed allegations concerning barrister Sarah Phillimore's conduct towards a young transgender woman. They characterised this behaviour as harassment. Ms Phillimore is now pursuing a defamation lawsuit against Jo, asserting these allegations are false.

Jo reports that they are not. Following our initial report, we formally referred Ms Phillimore's behaviour to the Bar Standards Board (BSB). Despite her objections, the BSB has now escalated the matter, referring it to their Investigations and Enforcement Team for further scrutiny.

Upon the initial exposure of her transphobic harassment, Ms Phillimore did not apologise. Instead, she intensified her social media activity and gained a prominent ally in author JK Rowling, one of the richest women in the country and author of a series of books about life at a posh boarding school. Ms Rowling has publicly stated she will help fund Ms Phillimore's defamation lawsuit against the Good Law Project.

But The Good Law project maintains that they will not be bullied into silence and that they remain committed to standing for what is right and will contest this lawsuit fully. They believe everyone deserves to live free from hate, and they are prepared to defend that principle in court if necessary.

Inc conclusion they say "Our ability to hold power to account, especially when the personal and legal risks are significant, relies on public support. We ask you to consider joining us in this effort to ensure we can continue standing up to bullies".
