Students Come to Bristol as Freshers Week Kicks Off

Bristol's two college radio stations, BURST (at the University of Bristol) and The HUB (at the University of the West of England) are kicking off special programming this week to welcome the tens of thousands of students coming to the city for their courses. Freshers Week sees the new intake of students get acclimatised to student life in Bristol, for many of them, a chance to break away from parental control and explore the world that the city can offer. For many LGBTQIA students, it will also be an opportunity to explore their sexuality and gender identity.

Whilst student life is a rich experience and offers a memorable path towards adulthood, we must also remember that for some students, there will be issues of homesickness, difficulties studying, depression, anxiety and uncertainty about who they are.

If this affects you, then your student union is a first point of call. Both UWE and the Bristol Uni offer counselling services and support students who are struggling. Never be afraid to reach out for help, as many people will be in the same boat as you. LGBTQIA students can also get involved in their student LGBT+ Society. These will offer emotional support and a chance to meet other queer students. As well, of course, a chance to go in groups on to Bristol's lively gay scene.

So, get involved, get help if you need it and welcome to Bristol. The rest of your life starts here!
