Sky News reports that the government has now backtracked on its early reported ditching of promises to ban anti-gay groups from trying to change gay people into heterosexuals. Late on Thursday evening, a government spokesperson said that the proposed ban on “conversion therapies” will now go ahead as originally promised. BUT, there will be no equivalent ban on anti-transgender campaigners trying to change trans people into cisgendered individuals. Initial responses from LGBTQIA groups suggest that the partial climbdown by the government is being seen as a cynical attempt to splinter the unity of the gay and trans movements. “We fight on, for an end to anti-queer coercive practice wherever it is found” tweeted one campaigner. Gay actor and intellectual heavyweight Stephen Fry said "Just when I thought my contempt for this disgusting government couldn't sink lower. A curse upon the whole lying, stinking lot of them."
