Rainbow Flags Can Fly Over German Buildings

18/04/2022

Cable News Channel Euronews reports that the new social democratic government of Germany has clarified the rules under which the rainbow flag can be flown from official buildings across the Republic.  They guidance says that the flag can be flown on any “concrete date”.  For example, this could be to coincide with a gay Pride event or the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York.  “We are a modern and diverse country,” said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser. “It is high time that we as state institutions also show that more clearly.”  A whole package of social reforms is planned by the German government, and one of them  is, according to Euronews, scrapping an old rule that transgender people need a psychiatric assessment and court ruling before legally changing their gender identity.
