Left wing weekly paper The Socialist Worker says that anti-reproductive choice extremists in Republican controlled Kansas have failed in their attempt to get abortion in the state curtailed by popular referendum. After years of believing their own right wing rhetoric, the religious zealots in charge of the Kansas Republican Party had thought that most ordinary people would back their proposal to ban abortion, even in cases of rape. But early indicators show a clear lead for the pro-choice side, with sixty per cent of voters aiming to keep abortion rights. The victory for pro-choice advocates was welcomed with tears and shouts of joy by many rallying for reproductive freedom. The result was, says Socialist Worker, the result of hard work put in by many different progressive parties and campaign groups, who worked together to lobby and mobilise the pro-choice vote. Rachel Sweet, the campaign manager for Kansans for Constitutional Freedom said, “We did it—these numbers speak for themselves. We knew it was stacked against us from the moment we started but we did not despair. We knocked on tens of thousands of doors and had hundreds of thousands of phone calls. We countered millions of dollars in misinformation. We will not tolerate extreme bans on abortion in our state.”
