Gay musical hero Sir Elton John has become just the latest celebrity to quit the Twitter platform after its billionaire new owner, Elon Musk, allowed what have been described “superspreaders of hate” back on to the website. Sir Elton said “All my life I’ve tried to use music to bring people together. Yet it saddens me to see how misinformation is now being used to divide our world. I’ve decided to no longer use Twitter, given their recent change in policy which will allow misinformation to flourish unchecked.” Sir Elton has been a firm defender of LGBTQIA civil rights and is among many to comment about the danger to democracy and freedom posed by conspiracy theorists, the far right and religious fundamentalists who spread lies online.
