Radio France Info, the main news network from Paris, reports on that other set of important elections that took place recently, namely the Euro Elections of mid June. Par Bruno Cadène reporting for Radio France Info says "While Western Europe gave pride of place to populists and far-right lists in the last European election, the Central European countries that are members of the European Union rather shunned them on 9 June 2024. The result, it seems, of a greater mobilization of moderate voters. Large or small, none of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe voted massively in favour of populist or far-right lists on 9 June 2024." Of some of the most homophobic and transphobic states in the EU Bloc, Cadene reports the following "For the first time in ten years, the populists and ultra-conservatives of Law and Justice (PiS) did not come out ahead in an election in Poland. In this country of 37 million inhabitants, it was the ruling Civic Coalition (EPP) party, Prime Minister Donald Tusk's party, which won the European elections with 37% of the votes cast and 21 seats in Parliament, against 36% and 20 seats for Jaroslaw Kaczynski's movement. And the majority is getting stronger: the Civic Coalition can now count on Third Way (EPP/Renew, 5 seats) and the Left (S&D, 3 seats)". And in Hungary, he says " It's true, Viktor Orban has won one more victory in the 2024 European elections. But for the first time, his lead is very contained. Admittedly, the Hungarian Civic Union (Conservatives and Reformists) won 45% and 11 seats, but the opposition achieved its best result. Peter Magyar's brand new movement, Respect and Freedom (Christian Democrats, EPP) won 30% of the vote and 7 seats, after barely three months of existence. What is more, in the opposition, the left is waking up, with 8% and 2 seats. 38% for the opposition and 45% for Orban, it's historic."
