Variety magazine says that screen legend Kevin Bacon will star in a new horror movie based in the world of anti-gay and anti-trans religious conversion groups. Called “They / Them”, the movie is a directorial debut for John Logan, who penned the screen play for blockbusters including “Gladiator” and “The Aviator”. Kevin Bacon takes the role of the evil anti-gay leader of the fundamentalist cult behind the camp. However, the young LGBTQIA+ people forced to endure the psychological trauma of the conversion group form a bond and begin to resist the camp’s religious programming. And their friendship is put to the test as a killer goes on the rampage, forcing them to fight for their lives. ““They/Them has been germinating within me my whole life,” Logan told Variety. “I’ve loved horror movies as long as I can remember, I think because monsters represent ‘the other’ and as gay kid I felt a powerful sense of kinship with those characters who were different, outlawed, or forbidden. I wanted to make a movie that celebrates queerness, with characters that I never saw when I was growing up. When people walk away from the movie, I hope they’re going to remember the incredible love that these kids have for each other and how that love needs to be protected and celebrated.” Thanks to London LGBT+ radio station Queerly for bringing the new film to our attention.
