Our Community Over the Holidays

Philip Zonkel writing in Q Voice News says that members of the LGBTQIA+ community need to make an additional effort over Christmas and the New Year, whilst some bars and help organisations are closed, to reach out to other LGBTQIA+ folks and ensure that they are nurtured and feel okay during the holidays. Here's what he has to say:

A good message is worth repeating.

As we approach the holidays, we hope you are enjoying time with family, chosen family, friends, or loved ones; in other words, people who truly care about your happiness and well being.

The holidays can be extremely emotionally difficult for our LGBTQ+ family members who have been shunned, disowned, or rejected by family and friends, or who grew up in an environment where it wasn't safe to be their authentic self.

This time of year can bring up feels of isolation and loneliness, especially when one is alone, including our seniors.

Many of us can relate to the uncomfortable feelings of spending time with people who are family in name only. "I think I'll have some wine" sometimes is a good solution.

But not everybody is fortunate enough to have a support system or group of family or friends they can turn to.

If you know some LGBTQ+ folks who might be alone for the Christmas or New Year's Eve reach out and see how they are. Maybe invite them over for some festivities or take them out.

That interaction might be a lifesaver.

Take care yourself, and take care of each other.
