Voodoo Day Celebrates Tolerant Religion

13/02/2024

The pagan blog and community website The Wild Hunt reports that New Orleans celebrated an inaugural National Voodoo Day on January 14th.  Voodoo, or voudun, to give it its proper African title, is a syncretic religion, which combines elements of roots from Benin, infused with the indigenous practices of Bulbancha residents, and complemented by the influences of Haitian Vodou and other African Traditional Religions.  Why is this relevant to LGBT+ people?  Well, Wikipedia notes that "Homosexuality in Haitian Vodou is religiously acceptable and homosexuals are allowed to participate in all religious activities".  Anti-gay individuals and groups exist within the Voudun religious movement, but in US based practice, LGBTQIA people are generally accepted.  There is more exploration of the issues online.
