Social Media Detrimental to Wellbeing

08/01/2024

South Wales hospital radio station Radio Glamorgan and BBC Radio Cymru are both reporting new findings that suggest that Generation Z are more likely to take breaks from social media, and detoxifying from the negative, hate driven world of right wing memes and general racism, homophobia and transphobia.  Gen Z - people born between 1996 and 2010 - are the most likely to say that social media impacts their wellbeing, the research showed.  The research was carried out by HMD Global, a mobile phone company.  Three in five people in the Gen Z age bracket are regularly undertaking a social media detox to reconnect with the world around them, the research showed.  Donna Dixon, who lectures in youth studies at the University of Bangor, said "The unhealthy use of social media... can be connected to mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression."  Meanwhile, in another report quoted by the BBC News Channel, it is not just LGBTQIA people whose identity is undermined by homophobic social media.  Social media could have an impact on the Welsh language and erode cultural identity, a study has found.  Nearly 70% of Welsh speakers used English "often" or "always" online with the majority using it more than Welsh.   Richard Jones, from Swansea University, said online language erosion could "threaten" cultural identity.   The findings were published in the journal Trends in Psychology.

Mae gorsaf radio ysbyty De Cymru Radio Morgannwg a BBC Radio Cymru ill dau yn adrodd am ganfyddiadau newydd sy’n awgrymu bod Generation Z yn fwy tebygol o gymryd seibiannau o’r cyfryngau cymdeithasol, a dadwenwyno o fyd negyddol memes asgell dde sy’n cael ei yrru gan gasineb a hiliaeth gyffredinol, homoffobia a trawsffobia. Gen Z - pobl a aned rhwng 1996 a 2010 - sydd fwyaf tebygol o ddweud bod cyfryngau cymdeithasol yn effeithio ar eu lles, yn ôl yr ymchwil. Cafodd yr ymchwil ei wneud gan HMD Global, cwmni ffonau symudol. Mae tri o bob pump o bobl yn ystod oedran Gen Z yn ymgymryd â dadwenwyno cyfryngau cymdeithasol yn rheolaidd i ailgysylltu â'r byd o'u cwmpas, dangosodd yr ymchwil. Dywedodd Donna Dixon, sy'n darlithio mewn astudiaethau ieuenctid ym Mhrifysgol Bangor, "Gall y defnydd afiach o gyfryngau cymdeithasol... fod yn gysylltiedig â materion iechyd meddwl, fel gorbryder ac iselder." Yn y cyfamser, mewn adroddiad arall a ddyfynnwyd gan y BBC News Channel, nid dim ond pobl LGBTQIA y mae eu hunaniaeth yn cael ei danseilio gan gyfryngau cymdeithasol homoffobig. Mae astudiaeth wedi darganfod y gallai cyfryngau cymdeithasol gael effaith ar y Gymraeg ac erydu hunaniaeth ddiwylliannol. Roedd bron i 70% o siaradwyr Cymraeg yn defnyddio Saesneg "yn aml" neu "bob amser" ar-lein gyda'r mwyafrif yn ei defnyddio'n fwy na'r Gymraeg. Dywedodd Richard Jones, o Brifysgol Abertawe, y gallai erydiad iaith ar-lein "fygwth" hunaniaeth ddiwylliannol. Cyhoeddwyd y canfyddiadau yn y cyfnodolyn Trends in Psychology.
