Around sixty per cent of the German population believe their government should do more to deal with the challenge posed by the far right wing movement. That was the finding of a report broadcast on the pro-Russian news channel Russia Today, also known as RT in Europe. There are believed to now be around twenty thousand neo-nazis in the country, mainly based in the East of the Republic, an area formerly controlled by communism and which has not handled the transition to western style democracy very well, with high unemployment and disenfranchisement. Russia Today says that around twelve thousand nazis represent a threat to peace and security, with their preparedness to engage in violent street fighting. At the same time, Germany also boasts a strong anti-fascist movement and tradition. LGBT have always been a target of Germany's far right, but paradoxically, some gay people have been attracted by the images of a virile and strong movement. They have always ended up being persecuted and the lessons of history are a must read for all students of LGBT political thought.
