Queer Guru web portal and blog reports that If you are thinking about having a ‘destination’ same-sex wedding this year, your choice has just got larger. The latest country to legalize marriage equality is Greece: a significant move as it is the first-ever Orthodox Christian nation to do so. The Greek Orthodox church is no friend of LGBTQIA+ people and opposed the move, but it was noted by many that the very ancient culture of Greece, which enjoyed a golden era of science and philosophy in the period around 800BCE, was broadly tolerant of samesex relationships, and even elevated some to spiritual status in their pantheon of gods. At any rate, the Greek Government enjoyed a large majority passing the new law by 176 to 76, and legislative reform also allows same-sex couples to adopt children. Earlier this year Estonia became the first country that was formerly in the Soviet Union to legalize same-sex marriage when their law went into effect on January 1, 2024. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation which tracks developments in the legal recognition of same-sex marriage around the world say that there are now thirty six countries around the globe where same-sex marriage is now legal.
