It is frequently argued by LGBT activists that the anti-trans or anti-gay commentators cannot form a reasonable argument when in debate. This seems to be the case with right of centre columnist Julia Hartley-Brewer, who presents a somewhat abrasive and argumentative programme on the commercial radio network Talk Radio UK. In a recent discussion on transgender prisoners, Ms Hartley-Brewer clashed with one of her own guests, who pointed out that cisgender women attack other women in prisons at a higher rate than that committed by trans women. Hartley-Brewer said that she would not tolerate the use of the word cisgender women and threatened to have her own guest removed from the studio. Hartley-Brewer has been responsible for many bizarre outbursts in the past. Newswire Pink News notes that after the horror of the Pulse Nightclub Massacre, she rudely told Guardian columnist Owen Jones that “gay people don’t own this”. In fact, it was later proven that the perpetrator of that event was an angry heterosexual who disliked gay people. Hartley-Brewer has never apologised for this outburst and in fact compounded her deranged position by suggesting that Mr Jones was the moral equivalent of Islamic State. We should note that Talk Radio UK has a wide range of presenters and that there are other voices which are much more supportive of LGBTQ human rights.
