Extremist TV Channel Challenged by Eco Group

15/04/2024

Despite its association with the now quit gay male television pundit Dan Wooton, the right wing television channel GB News is generally considered hostile to LGBTQIA+ rights, and particularly those of transgender women, the supposed dangers of, it continually features in its output.  Some media experts and liberal media such as the Guardian have criticised the broadcast regulator OFCOM for not taking firmer action against the biased TV channel, when they have come down hard against other broadcasters such as alleged Islamic extremism on Asian stations.  So it was that on March 18th, many LGBTQIA+ people applauded the radical environmental group Extinction Rebellion when it protested the channel's parent company.  In a press release, Extinction Rebellion said "Days after the government released a new definition of extremism, XR activists are blockading the offices of GB News and its multi-millionaire owner Paul Marshall branding him and his pet broadcaster as ‘the real extremists’ – and demanding an end to their torrent of climate lies and disinformation.... Days after the government released a new definition of extremism, XR activists are blockading the offices of GB News and its multi-millionaire owner Paul Marshall branding him and his pet broadcaster as ‘the real extremists’ – and demanding an end to their torrent of climate lies and disinformation."  The press release went on to say that letters have been sent to the relevant authorities challenging them to take seriously the undermining of democracy by the far right, and asking whether GB News is actually fit to hold a broadcasting license.
