People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which is an international animal rights charity, and which enjoys the support of several high profile gay figures including Martina Navratilova and Alan Cumming, has prompted debate amongst feminists with a blog post that argues that real feminists should oppose the egg industry. PETA says that “As the battle for control over women’s fertility and reproductive rights wages on, feminists are rising up against abuse and exploitation.” They add “Widening our circle of compassion doesn’t hurt anyone—It only serves to end the cycle of oppression and suffering that results when one group seeks to exploit another that it has deemed inferior.”. PETA enjoys a fair amount of support within the LGBT community, and has worked with activists such as Peter Tatchell to link up queer freedom and animal rights. On the other hand, it has also earned criticism after telling leather men that they should ditch animal skin in favour of rubber and for – in the words of one feminist vegan activist – simplifying complex ethical issues.
