US Still Faces Reactionary Legislation

14/04/2021

Despite the victory of a progressive Presidency in the United States a couple of months ago, the cultural warfare being waged by the political right wing against anything they consider to be black, feminist, socialist or gay, continues. Arkansas, says the BBC News Channel, has prohibited all gender affirmation treatments for transgender people under the age of eighteen. Medical professionals are not even allowed to refer such clients to other services. The governor of Arkansas Asa Hutchinson, himself a staunch Republican came out in favour of trans youth, pointing out that Republicans should believe in the self determination of people rather than using the muscle of the state to restrict their life choices. Shrai Popat, reporting from Washington DC, said that sixteen other states are considering similar legislation, in the face of the vast majority of medical opinion which says that shutting down choice for trans youth is having massively detrimental affect on youngsters health.
