Russian opposition leader, and one of the few Russian politicians to speak out in favour of LGBTQ human rights, Aleksei Nalvany, is defiant after being detained by the authoritarian Russian state the moment he returned to his home country. He had been in Germany receiving care after being mysteriously poisoned by a serious nerve agent. The intelligence community widely believes that the Russian government, who have a track record of poisoning political opponents, were behind this effort to silence Mr Nalvany. The opposition politician's supporters rallied in several cities where the Police made numerous arrests for largely fictional offences. The Russian state's actions have been condemned by international human rights watchers including the United Nations and Amnesty International. The dissident radio network Radio Free Europe, which transmits independent news to Russia, where media is tightly controlled by the state, is following the case of Mr Nalvany closely. We have popped a link to its coverage on our website.
