Reports of the end of the alternative press are premature it seems. Gay Star News this week looked back on the Annual Feminist and Queer Zine Fest held at Barnard College in New York. A Zine is a type of underground or alternative magazine. Usually hand produced and xeroxed on a photocopier, Zines have been popular since the end of the seventies when many titles emerged as part of the punk rock explosion on both sides of the Atlantic. Feminist and LGBT zines were given a new impetus by the emergence of the Riot Girl and Queercore music scenes in the early nineteen nineties. Organisers were keen to stress that their interpretation of feminism was very much trans exclusive, and many transgender and gender non binary zines exchanged hands at the event. In Greater Bristol, zines are available at Hydra Radical Bookstore at 34 Old Market Street, at the Exchange Indie Record Shop at the bottom of Old Market, and from Rough Trade Records on Lewins Mead, just round the corner from our sister station Ujima Radio.
