The leftist group The Socialist Party of England and Wales, formerly known as the Militant Tendency, said that over one hundred women came together on 17th January for an afternoon of the Party’s Women’s Meeting. Many issues were discussed, including anxiety and depression amongst the workforce, low pay and the battle over free school meals. The Women’s Committee notes that trade union membership has blossomed amongst younger women, who make up the bulk of lower paid workers in the UK. With respect to its female activists within the National Education Union, the Socialist Party of England and Wales reports: “21,000 joined the NEU last year. 17,000 in the first week of this year. They have become activists fighting for workplace safety. 400,000 people attended a Zoom meeting to organise for action on school safety”. The Party said that in 2021 they would be contesting seats in local elections under the name of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition.
