Cornwall Marks St Piran's Day

02/03/2021

It was Saint David's Day this week, on Monday. And this weekend, 5th March, marks St Piran's Day, the patron date of Cornwall. A lot smaller than Wales, Cornwall is the furthermost South West part of England, and was annexed by the kingdom of Wessex, the forerunner of Southern England in the year 838. Cornwall, like Wales and Ireland, is a Celtic country and its unique identity continued, with its own language, flag and linguistic institutions. A language revival has been driven with the help of new media, with internet TV, internet podcasting and the local community radio stations providing output in the native language. The local LGBTQ community has become more organised and active as well. The Intercom Trust is an umbrella group operating across Cornwall, and lists dozens of local organisations for our community ranging from the Gay Outdoor Club to Kernow Positive Support, by way of Rainbow Families Cornwall and Young and Yourself, an LGBTQ Youth Group. The main Cornish nationalist party, Mebyon Kernow, is a centre left devolution party, similar to Plaid Cymru in Wales and like them, supports LGBTQ civil and human rights. One supporter of Cornish self rule is London based gay activist Peter Tatchell who has written for the Guardian newspaper on his views for self determination for all the Celtic lands. And how do you say “Happy St Pirans Day”? You say “Gool Piran Lowen”.
