Radical lesbian feminists who have sympathy with anti-transgender groups were warned by twitter users that they too would be turned on by the right wing, after anti-transgender extremists turned on mild mannered television chat show host Graham Norton last week. Mr Norton, who is gay, suffered barrages of hate mail after he made a moderate and not at all militant statement saying that the world should engage with transgender people rather than dismissing them in the moral panic that has been whipped up by certain groups and the British homophobic papers. Although Mr Norton had to close his twitter account, many celebrities were motivated to speak out on the hateful bile unleashed by the anti-trans commentators. Karen Adam MSP expressed her horror at their approach, calling them “unhinged”. Gay journalist Owen Jones wrote: “It is trans people who are suffering the horrendous consequences of an anti-trans moral panic stoked by media outlets and politicians who will be damned by history”. And another user called Mike J remarked ““[To bully] a gay man off of Twitter for simply saying ‘talk to trans people, not me’ shows how far these hateful bigots have fallen. They are not pro gay they are far right bigots who peddle hatred & don’t care who they stamp over”. Pink News said that the army of anti-trans fanatics was prompted by author Joanne Rowling, who fashions herself “JK Rowling”. Rowling denies that she is right wing, transphobic or homophobic. However, her critics point out that her most recent twitter arguments have been with a gay man, and with well known socialist activist and songwriter Billy Bragg. Twitter user Julian remarked “if you want to see what cancel culture really looks like, look no further than Graham Norton being cancelled by a mob of extremists after a billionaire falsely accused him of condoning rape and death threats, simply because he said “talk to trans people.””.
