LGBTQIA advocates, secular campaigners, the left and anti-fascists have united in sending warm wishes of solidarity to Susie Green, the Chief Executive of the trans and non-binary youth support charity Mermaids, as she moves on to pastures new after six news. Ms Green has steered the charity bravely through a concerted effort, led by the sordid right wing newspaper the “Daily Telegraph” to close it down. Top gay newswire PINK NEWS reveals that the “Telegraph”, which is often lampooned as the “Torygraph” for its far right agenda, says “The paper also published an “investigation”, relying entirely on an unidentified adult masquerading as a 14-year-old child to access services, including the charity’s youth forum and web chat helpline, before suggesting that the use of chest binders, a safe and common practice for some trans and non-binary people, could be considered child abuse”. This is categorically not the case, as the Metropolitan Police confirmed. This has not stopped the squalid readers of the “Telegraph” and other far rightists from targetting the charity, publishing pictures of staff and breaching their privacy whilst advocating hate attacks. But the LGBTQIA communities are fighting back with already nearly fifty thousand pounds raised for a Mermaid Fighting Fund to keep the organisation’s vital services open. The advocacy group Trans Actual spoke for many when it said “Sending our love to Susie and our thanks for all the work she’s done for trans children and young people and their families - especially through and incredibly challenging time.”
