There are some LGBTQ people whose views are somewhat unusual compared to mainstream gay or trans opinion. Witness the frequent forays into television punditry by Doctor David Starkey, a gay historian of the Tudor period, but also given to highly contentious pronouncements on race, sexuality and identity. Another controversial figure is Caitlyn Jenner, whose views on transgender issues are largely out of step with trans lobbying groups and activists. Stopped in the street by the entertainment TV network TMZ, Ms Jenner, who came out as trans in 2015, said that she agreed with Republican Party attempts to restrict the participation of trans girls in girls sports activities at high schools in the States. Ms Jenner is proposing to stand as a Republican for the governership of California. Trans bloggers were quick to point out that Ms Jenner does not speak for the majority of the trans population.
