In Sports news, a team founded by our friend Lucy Clark of the trans radio network Trans Radio UK, has made history. The Metro newspaper reports that TRUK United stepped on the field at Dulwich Hamlet Football Club on March 31st, the International Trans Day of Visibility. They took on – and were thrashed seven nil by – Dulwich Hamlet Women’s Team. Nevertheless, the real winner was sport itself as the TRUK United Team was the first all transwomen’s football team to compete in a football fixture. Gay and lesbian teams have existed for some time, of course, and the whole area of LGBTQIA sports is growing as queer people overcome boundaries to stake a claim to mainstream sporting and recreational activities. Football legend Peter Crouch was present for the game, as he played early in his career at Dulwich. He was covering the game for a television programme called Save Our Beautiful Game which looks at grassrooots football across the UK. The game was described by the Metro Sports desk as “attended by a large crowd of supportive people and the atmosphere was buzzing with electricity and it was apparent fans were aware of the importance of the game they were watching”.
