Lionesses Subject to Hate Online

13/09/2022

Lesbian and women’s hero Demi Stokes has revealed to the Independent Newspaper that most of the England Lionesses, whose superb win at the Women’s Euros forever changes the relationship between women’s football and the nation at large, received misogynistic and in many cases homophobic and racist abuse on social media as well, during and after their victory. It seems that some straight, white and male people do not want women to play football. Whilst Ms Stokes said that these attitudes stem from previous generations when women were not expected to engage in sport, Hate Lab, which collects data on hate speech, discovered that 92 per cent of the England women’s national football team were subjected to hate speech on social media platforms in the build-up to and during the tournament. Some 96 per cent of the abuse was misogynistic, while 4 per cent was homophobic. Researchers analysed more than 78,000 social media posts aimed at the Lionesses. Ms Stokes plays left back in the England Team and also for Manchester City. She said that social media “can really break people”.
