Gay Icons Fall as Qatar Nightmare Unfolds

15/11/2022

Football pundit Gary Neville was criticised during his stint as guest presenter of the BBC satirical programme “Have I Got News for You”. Panellists said that by agreeing to commentate at the World Cup in repressive Qatar, he was conferring legitimacy to a regime which has committed numerous human rights violations.  Guest star Richard Madeley earned a spontaneous round of applause from the audience when he excoriated Robbie Williams and David Beckham for agreeing to appear in Qatar as part of the World Cup celebrations.  Mr Madeley referenced human rights abuses against LGBTQIA people and migrant workers amongst others.  Others have also sharply criticised David Beckham for his involvement in the World Cup.  The newsletter of the Peter Tatchell Foundation said that Mr  Beckham might have once been a “gay icon”, but not any longer.
