Greg Clarke, the Chairperson of the Football Association in the UK, has resigned his role after making a reference to black players which used the outdated term “coloured” which is regarded as offensive by many people. For Clarke, it was the latest in a number of unfortunate references that had been made in recent years. Sky News reported that he had made condescending remarks about female football players and strongly implied that being gay was simply a “life choice”. Mr Clarke issued a statement of apology, and said that he had been considering moving on from the FA for some time. In leaving, he said “My unacceptable words in front of Parliament were a disservice to our game and to those who watch, play, referee and administer it. This has crystallised my resolve to move on. I am deeply saddened that I have offended those diverse communities in football that I and others worked so hard to include.”
