BBC Radio 5 Live reports that the English Football League has for the first time appointed a female referee to officiate at a man’s game. Rebecca Welch, who is thirty seven, will be in charge for Bank Holiday’s Monday's League Two match between Harrogate and Port Vale. She said she was delighted to take on the task, and added that whilst she had never really considered herself a trailblazer for women’s equality in sports, she had come to accept the accolade much more during the last couple of years. The Harrogate and Port Vale match should be covered by the BBC Radio 5 sports channel, and by BT Sports on cable television.
