LGBTQ Muslims Mark Islamic New Year

21/08/2020

LGBT Muslim groups have been peaceful  Muharram greetings to their members and supporters.  Muharram is the Islamic New Year, and falls at sun down tonight, 20th August.  The first week or so of Muharram is usually a relatively solemn affair, dedicated to remembering and in cases fasting.  There are many different ways of marking the date, depending on which branch of Islam someone practices and which part of the world they are in.  First Post explains that martyrdom of Imam Hussein, who was the grandson of the Prophet, is very important to shia Muslims, whilst Sunni Muslims mark the leaving of the Ark by Noah.  We are pleased to note that there are now numerous LGBTQ Muslim groups active online.  You can find some on FaceBook, but the largest, Hidayah and Imaan, both have their own impressive websites.
