Atheists Discuss Why Representation Matters

12/09/2022

Jonathan Pearce writing at the international atheist online magazine Only Sky, which takes its name from a verse in the utopian song “Imagine” by atheist and LGBTQIA ally John Lennon, writes that the normalisation of samesex relationships on television is to be welcomed. He refers to the excellent new drama series “Locke and Key” in which a peripheral character marries another man. Mr Pearce writes: My boys watched the wedding scene, with its build-up and introduction of the gay fiancé. They didn’t bat an eyelid. They watched as the two men had an onscreen kiss. They didn’t bat an eyelid. …. this isn’t tokenism. This is about turning something that was once a sexual taboo into a sexual norm with no negative moral or psychological connotations. My kids have got there. . Let’s hope we all do, sooner rather than later.” In the comments discussion, a commentator called Ben has some interesting points to make. He says: “Wardell Pomeroy, co-author of the Kinsey studies, personally told me over 40 years ago that more nonsense has been written on the subject of homosexuality than any other subject apart from the nature and mind of God. To my mind, two things have been proved over and over again about homophobia. First, homophobia is not the fear of homosexuals, it is the fear that you, yourself are Homosexual. That explains the Homo Hating Homos that infest organized religion like the magats that they are. Secondly, so much of what is said and written and done about gay people and homosexuality has very little to do with actual gay people. It’s not about gay people, it’s about what some heterosexual people, and some people who desperately wish they were heterosexual but are never going to be, think about gay people.”
