Anniversary of Last UK Hanging for Blasphemy

08/01/2022

Radio Caroline reports in its notes for the day that it has been 325 years since the last person in Britain was executed for blasphemy.  The right to criticise religion in held to be very important by LGBTQIA and feminist groups.  At the time the government prosecution of student Thomas Aikenhead claimed that he "maintained, in conversation, that theology was a rhapsody of ill-invented nonsense, patched up partly of the moral doctrines of philosophers, and partly of poetical fictions and extravagant chimeras'.
