Radio Caroline reports that it was this week in 1966 that the religious Texas radio station KLUE organised the first of the bizarre series of “anti-Beatles Bonfires” held by religious conservatives after John Lennon made the remark that the pop group was “bigger than Jesus”. Mr Lennon's remarks actually read "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue about that; I'm right and I will be proved right ... Jesus was alright but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me." Lennon remained a critic of conservative religions throughout his life. He and Yoko Ono supported a wide variety of progressive causes including the early gay liberation movement.
