Pink News reports that a new study in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology analyses the increasing paranoia amongst ultra-conservative and fundamentalist Christians based on an American study of two thousand people who identify as white and religiously conservative. This cohort increasingly sees itself as losing what it thinks is a “cultural war” with progressives and LGBTQIA people, with samesex marriage being taken as a personal affront. For this group, which sees conservative Christianity as the defining characteristic of an American identity, they feel increasing agitation at LGBTQIA people. However, the report does strike a positive note which says that moderate and mainstream Christians who do not hold fundamentalist tendencies, are more open to the idea that a genuine Christianity does not impose extreme beliefs on all.
