The gay and socialist campaigning journalist Owen Jones is not impressed at the possible future for the British media. Despite the presence of community broadcasting and podcasting across the UK, Jones notes that the government is loading both the BBC and the broadcast regulator OFCOM with politicized right wing appointees and he feels that this could lead to a situation similar to the US, where major networks are polarized politically, and tabloid trash TV pits various communities against each other rather than encouraging dialogue. Is there hope? Well, he feels that there is – on a platform that many people feel is somewhat responsible for the growth of conspiracies, hate groups and attention deficit TV – namely the internet. But Jones is undeterred and promises a new weekly politics video stream which will talk about grass roots solutions to the issues that affect our lives. He will be fundraising from supporters and says that the show will be accountable to its viewers and their concerns.
