Linking Up the Struggles in Wales

21/06/2021

African-Caribbean community newspaper The Voice, which these days publishes many articles exploring the different intersections of liberty and oppression that affect black British people, reports with pride on the first school in Wales to sign up to the Halo Code, an understanding that people wearing Afro hairtyles will not be judged or criticised for their choices. The code is a response, according to their launch press release online, to some instances where people with Afros or variations on African hair styles have been ordered to “tone down” their appearance for the benefit of the majority. Corporate backers already include Unilever and the Co-operative Bank, Estee Lauder and Proctor & Gamble. Ysgol Hamadryad, which is a Welsh medium school in the Welsh capital, Caerdydd / Cardiff, has become the first school in the country to sign up to the Halo Code. It is based in Grangetown, a diverse and blended community district and home to people of many backgrounds. Jessica Dunrod, writing in the Voice said she was proud of being a Welsh citizen and said that the school showed that the traditional Welsh culture could be inclusive and supportive of diversity.
