Bristol's Liberal Democrats have selected the gay former Member of Parliament for the Bristol West Seat to contest the post of Mayor of the West of England. The position is current held by Tim Bowles for the Conservative Party. Mr Williams has been involved in politics for a very long time and has served on Bristol City Council and the old Avon Country Council as well. The Liberal Democrats, a centrist political party, has had a long standing gay rights platform and although it has not been in government since its participation in the Coalition of 2010 to 2015, has nevertheless gained considerable LGBTQ votes with its policies. On the other hand, its former leader, Tim Farron, was an evangelical Christian who flip flopped on LGBTQ issues and after quitting as party head, made an astonishing attack on secular values in an interview with a Christian radio station in London.
