Disappointment at Legislative Programme

13/05/2022

Our colleagues at Trans Radio UK spoke for many in the week when they issued a statement following the Queen’s Speech, a tradition which outlines the legislative programme of government for the coming Parliamentary session. As expected, transgender, intersex and nonbinary people are being excluded from the proposed ban on conversion pseudo-therapies, but also the ban stops short of fully protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer adults from being coerced into undergoing damaging treatments. Trans Radio UK note “Conversion Therapy is well documented to not only be unsuccessful, but also leaves the victim of it with a lifetime of suffering either physically, mentally or both”. Lobby group Stonewall added “For the second year, the Queen’s Speech has promised to ban conversion therapy. But today it made explicit that trans conversion practices will not be included and adults will be able to “consent”. This pared down bill will end up protecting nobody - unless we act now”. They are encouraging supporters and allies to email their MP.
