Agenda of Anti-Choice Groups Exposed - Paper

26/10/2020

Writing in the left wing weekly Socialist Worker, Sarah Bates analyses how anti-abortion groups operate in the United States and how they endeavour to control women's bodies. She notes that more than two million dollars was ploughed into getting anti-abortion zealots to stand in local elections in the US in the last couple of years. More importantly, Bates looks at why anti-choice groups operated, and what function they fill in a hetero-patriarchal society run for greed and profit. She notes that the claim from the anti-abortionists that they are protectors of children are a lie, writing “they want to slash public services and welfare, making children’s and parent’s lives harder. “. She notes that the heterosexual nuclear family “is useful for the bosses who sit at the top of capitalist society because they get to reap years of women’s labour”. Interestingly, Sarah also observes that current US President Donald Trump used to be personally pro-Choice, and that personally, he dislikes evangelical Christian groups who oppose abortion. But he has courted their votes to shore up his power base.
