The years between 1903 and 1923 saw major change, socially and politically, and revolution was in the air. The old order of society in Britain was crumbling and there was the distinct possibility of major political upheaval, as women exerted their political power, trade unions went on strike, and radicalism of various types flourished. Of course, in Russia, there was a revolution, although it later went horribly wrong and became one of the most oppressive states the world has known. Even so, it is arguable that you cannot understand the later periods of radicalism without understanding this period, during which early homosexual emancipation ground flourised. PBS America channel plays several documentaries on this revolutionary period on Sunday afternoon (4th July).
