Gay Icon Garland Celebrated in Movie

18/10/2020

Sky Movies Drama has a treat on Sunday night for devotees of gay icons. Judy Garland is profiled in the film “Judy”, showing at 11.40pm. Starring Renee Zelwegger as the brilliant but also slightly tragic figure, the 2019 film follows a period of months during the last year of her life when Garland had relocated to London. It's a poignant and moving portrayal. It may just be coincidence, but a common mythology of the Stonewall Rebellion of June 1969 notes that the LGBTQ population of New York were emotionally impacted by the funeral of Garland on 27th June, the night that the rebellion started. For this reason as well as many others, Garland will forever be remembered as a gay icon and her personal story fused with that of the gay community in the West.
