We all like a cute story book, and in the modern world, diversity is a watchword, helping children of all backgrounds feel happy, confident and themselves in this world. The BBC News Channel reports that the poet Raymond Antrobus and illustrator Polly Dunbar, have joined forces to publish a charming little storybook about the adventures of a deaf little bear. The delightful teddy learns about deafness and is designed to plug a gap in the number of awareness titles there are featuring deaf people and characters. Deaf culture has a rich history in the UK, and its language, BSL is now recognized by the EU as a minority language. Deaf LGBTQ culture is also vibrant, with an active population and lots of cultural institutions dealing with LGBTQ Deaf people. Past groups have included the Bristol based DeafFAB, but the current flagbearers for LGBTQ Deaf people are Deaf Rainbow UK. They deal with social events, emotional support and provide friendship.
