Peter Tatchell has published some proposals for an alternative march to the main Pride Festival, scheduled for 11th September. Mr Tatchell, who is on the left of the LGBTQ movement says that he wants to get back to the spirit of the early Gay Pride Marches in London, which were self organised on a non-profit basis. He's not alone as other groups across the more radical wings of the political spectrum have also been critical of Pride London in recent years. The anarchist Solidarity Federation which advocates gay and trans liberation as part of a wider overthrow of capitalism, also tweeted this week that it favoured “Queer Liberation not Capitalist Assimilation”. Nevertheless, most of the centre ground of the LGBTQ movements hold that a mixture of strategies is necessary to achieve the freedom of our rainbow nation. One gay man tweeted “Peter is usually right and I have nothing against the radical groups, but the capitalist sponsors that they criticise allow Pride to go ahead and impact positively on heterosexual people's attitudes”.
