It's been a busy week for the conspiracy theory scene. There are of course big and small conspiracy theorists and they range from the charming to the demented, with some particularly dangerous ones being ideas such as the Jewish and Gypsy conspiracy ideas of senior Nazi officials, which fuelled the death camps of central Europe in the second world war. Conspiracies don't die easily, however, and in the ever more poisonous and homophobic campaign against marriage equality in Australia, the Jewish world conspiracy is back, joining forces with another astonishingly resilient one, that of the Illumniati, who apparently are together trying to get “evil gay marriage” on the statute books. To what end is never explained, but this seems not to matter in the welter of internet ranting and even banners that have appeared in Australian cities in recent weeks. Meanwhile, black supremacists are also getting in on the conspiracy action, proving it's not just white males with a problem here. Pink News reported that an online African-American evangelist has fused homophobia with black nationalism, and explains that the evil CIA (who are also, naturally, Illuminati) is behind efforts to legalise cannabis for medicinal use, because cannabis apparently turns black men gay. Again, to what end is not elaborated. We of course, would be thrilled if there really was a world gay conspiracy to turn everyone in to gay and trans individuals. Our listening figures would be boosted and we could reappropriate all that BBC money for a better studio here. Watch out!
