The Jewish Chronicle reports that gay playwright Alan Bennett’s “Talking Heads” is amongst the few plays currently in performance, at London’s Bridge Theatre, where social distancing is enforced and drinks are served to the guests seats rather than at a crowded bar. Imedla Staunton and Lucian Msamati star in their respective monologues, showcasing Bennet’s power of observation and of making even unpleasant characters likeable. In Staunton’s case, her life is spent writing letters to various agencies and individuals to whom she feels she should complain, taking things ultimately to Her Majesty the Queen. Msmati’s character Wilfred appears to have a simple life sweeping leaves, but there is a hint that the character has a less reputable past. Bennett’s plays, observes the Jewish Chronicle, are a “a defiant green shoot in Britain’s decimated cultural landscape.”. For more information about booking visit bridgetheatre.co.uk.
