Jane Nellist writes on the new politics of the menopause for the left wing weekly The Socialist, which is the journal of the Marxist group the Socialist Party of England and Wales, known to many by its former name of the Militant Tendency. Ms Nellist says that whilst it is admirable that celebrities like Davina McColl have opened up debate in the mainstream media about how to support women going through the menopause, the fact remains that access to appropriate workplace and medical support is, as she puts it a “class issue”. She says “for many women, the cost of trying to access HRT is prohibitive. Even paying for prescriptions, if you are on low pay, is out of reach for some. And not all women can take HRT.”. HRT stands for Hormone Replacement Therapy. Reporting good news in the campaign for better workplace support for menopausal women, Ms Nellist says “The Wales Trade Union Congress (TUC) has produced an excellent document outlining the importance of campaigning and fighting for workplace policies. But more must be done!” Meanwhile the animal rights campaign group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, abbreviated to PETA, says that one HRT treatment, Premarin, is not suitable for vegan women and adds that if you are vegan then you can “ask your physician to prescribe one of the many safe and effective plant-based alternatives that are available.”.
